How to sharpen and hone knives

Honing and sharpening are different. Honing helps to keep the knives sharp but it does not sharpen them. Honing entails removing spurs, nicks and re-calibrating the knife’s angle.

Hone

  • While holding the knife in your left hand, rest the steel bottom side on a flat surface so that it does not slide
  • Place the knife against a steel rod and pull slowly while maintaining a specific angle preferably 20 degrees.
  • Repeat the process for about ten times
  • Wipe the blade until it becomes clean

Sharpen

There are different ways to sharpen the knife. You can use a whetstone to make the process a breeze.

  • Grasp the handle of the knife and hold its edge against a stone
  • Stabilize the blade using the other hand
  • Slide the knife blade back and forth
  • Repeat the process several to make the knife sharper
